There is a beauty in things that have been used too much - of things returning to the earth. You've touched on "wabi" here - the aesthetical appreciation of poverty In the West we know it, but have no name for it.
You know a very cool Japanese, Bob :) My dictionary says "austere beauty" is a similar word of "wabi"...it's a little bit different, though. I found this old piano in a musical instrument museum in Hamamatsu where I used to work in and live in by myself. Many musical instrument companies have their factories there.
